What is a Margin Calculator?
A margin calculator helps you find the amount you need to deposit with your broker before placing an
F&O trade. It calculates the SPAN margin and Exposure margin required for your chosen position.
Types of Margins
- SPAN Margin: Standardized Portfolio Analysis of Risk — the minimum margin set by the exchange, covering maximum possible one-day loss.
- Exposure Margin: An extra buffer collected by the broker over and above SPAN to cover residual risks.
- VaR Margin: Value at Risk — used in the cash/equity segment; covers potential loss based on historical volatility.
- Extreme Loss Margin: Covers losses beyond VaR — typically 5% of position value or 1.5× standard deviation of returns.
